Riding the St. Anthony family trail is a special experience. It is located within the green ring of the Novalja Field, filled with vineyards, olive groves, and green pastures where you will certainly encounter the local native favorite – the Pag sheep. This easy route is ideal for families, older riders, and less experienced cyclists, winding along asphalt, gravel, dirt, and stone paths.
The trail begins and ends at the small church of St. Anthony (the Hermit) in the Novalja Field, after which it was named. The gentle surroundings of green meadows and fragrant flowers of aromatic medicinal herbs are complemented by the soft murmur of a spring of drinking water that feeds a reed-covered pond. Various bird species hide here, as well as numerous amphibians such as frogs, sea turtles, eels, and other diverse wildlife.
Already after the first turn, we move onto a gravel road alongside a vineyard. If we pause for a moment and look back, the view will encompass the entire Old Novalja and the bay, providing an opportunity for the first photographic memories.
We continue riding through a typical coastal landscape characterized by dry-stone-walled plots known among locals as “ogradice.” These so-called ogradice are intended for keeping domestic animals or cultivating traditional agricultural crops. For this reason, caution is advised, and fences and gates should always be closed and not damaged.
Riding along a predominantly gravel road eventually leads us to the main asphalt road in the Novalja Field, which takes us back to the starting point near the church of St. Anthony.
A large number of biking paths has been mapped in Lika area, crossing the Velebit mountain and reaching Podgorje along with Novalja on the island of Pag. Every year their number grows, and so does the interest for cycling in this extraordinary area.
