Novalja Field is a natural green oasis that stands out from the rocky, moon-like landscape characteristic of the eastern side of the island beneath Velebit. Thanks to its fertile soil, it abounds in diverse vegetation, an attractive Mediterranean landscape, and rich wildlife. Although the cycling route is easy, it includes several more demanding ascents and descents, making it suitable for families, older riders, and less experienced cyclists.
The trail begins and ends in front of the Church of St. Anthony, situated in the ethereal setting of the green oases of Novalja Field, olive trees, and oleander flowers. Following the cycling signage, a gentle ascent leads you to the first point – Hotel “Boškinac,” awarded a Michelin star in 2020. After a shorter but somewhat steeper climb, we reach an elevation where the modernly equipped hunting lodge “Jarebica” is located, offering a unique view of Novalja Field below. The panoramic view and the field spread out beneath you are the “hot spots” of this unique trail on the island of Pag. A gentle descent then leads you into the heart of Novalja Field as the entire route passes through the natural coastal landscape, unusual single tracks, and wide gravel roads.
We pass through a peaceful area surrounded by the rich plant and animal life of Novalja Field. If your gaze wanders across the surroundings, you may spot a frightened rabbit in a hurry, a stalking fox, a turtle enjoying the meadow, or a lizard basking in the sun.
The trail leads us to the main asphalt road of Novalja Field, where small puddles can be seen along the edges and may overflow onto the roadway during heavier rainfall. This road brings us back to the starting point, the Church of St. Anthony. The idyllic surroundings are enhanced by a reed-covered pond and a small rest area with benches and tables, as well as a spring of drinking water. The shade of tall tree canopies makes it an ideal place for rest, regeneration, and a lasting memory of Novalja Field.
A large number of biking paths has been mapped in Lika area, crossing the Velebit mountain and reaching Podgorje along with Novalja on the island of Pag. Every year their number grows, and so does the interest for cycling in this extraordinary area.
